There are different types of hair extensions, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. One of the most popular varieties at the moment is weave extensions. These consist of wefts made from 100% Remy human hair, which is why they are known for their natural appearance. Weave extensions can be attached in various ways, but both methods require care and precision. What makes these extensions so popular? And what advantages and disadvantages do they have? We’ll tell you everything about them!
Advantages of weave hair extensions
Weave extensions offer many benefits, such as natural-looking hair length and extra volume. Other advantages include:
- Long-lasting results
- Secure attachment
- Reusable
- Natural appearance
- Easy to style
- Easy to maintain

Disadvantages of weave extensions
Although weave extensions have many benefits, there are also some points to consider. Here are the main disadvantages:
- Relatively expensive – Due to the use of 100% Remy human hair and professional application.
- Professional application required – They must be applied by a specialist.
- Regular maintenance required – They need to be moved up after 4 to 8 weeks.
- No natural nourishment – They require additional care with nourishing shampoos and conditioners.
Methods for applying weave extensions

A hairstylist can apply weave extensions in two ways: using the microring method or sewing in the extensions. Each weave extension application technique has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Microring method
With the microring technique, sections of your hair are fitted with a microring with a silicone interior. The silicone provides extra protection and stability. A weft of the extensions is attached to the ring, after which the ring is clamped shut to secure it to your natural hair. The rings are distributed evenly so that the weight of the wefts does not cause hair damage. Microring extensions need to be moved up again after four to eight weeks.
Sewing into braids
To sew in weave extensions, braids are created in your hair and secured. The weave extensions are attached and sewn into these braids. Thanks to the secure attachment, sewn-in wefts stay in place for six to eight weeks, longer than with the microring method. However, this technique is time-consuming and therefore often more expensive. This method puts more strain on the scalp and is therefore less suitable for people with thin hair.
Are weaves bad for your hair?
Thanks to their many advantages and limited disadvantages, weave extensions are among the least damaging hair extensions. No heat or glue is used, which can damage your natural hair. However, you should make sure that you leave your extensions in for a maximum of four to eight weeks, after which they need to be moved up. This is also the case with many hair extensions, as you will notice when buying tape-in extensions. Without timely maintenance, the extensions can pull on your hair and cause hair loss or breakage. With proper maintenance, you can enjoy your weave extensions for a long time, worry-free!
