Which length of tape extensions: how to choose the right length

Welke lengte tape extensions: zo kies je de juiste lengte

The right length determines whether your look appears natural and falls beautifully into shape. At Luxury for Princess, you will find tape-in extensions made from 100% Remy human hair, measuring 22 inches (approximately 56 cm). This length is popular because it allows you to create both a long, glamorous look and a subtle extension. Below, you can see how 56 cm falls at different heights and with different hair types, when to choose 56 cm, when shortening it is a smart choice, and which length guidelines help you achieve a seamless blend.

How 22 inches (56 cm) falls on your height

The final length position depends on your height, starting length, and texture. Use the guideline below as a reference.

Body height Length position with straight/wavy hair Length position with curly hair
Shorter than 160 cm Around the waist or just below it Around the lower chest
160 - 170 cm Around the lower chest or just above the waist Around mid-chest
Taller than 170 cm Around mid-chest Around just below the collarbone to above the chest

Curls and strong waves visually “shrink” by 5-10 cm compared with straight hair. Thicker hair looks shorter because there is more volume through the lengths. Want to see how different lengths fall in real life? View our before-and-after examples.

Choose the right length based on your own hair

Start with your current length and your goal: adding volume only or adding length. A commonly used guideline is that extensions should not be longer than approximately twice the length of your own hair. This keeps the transition natural and prevents a visible “line”.

  • If your hair reaches just above the shoulders or is shorter, 56 cm usually creates too much contrast. Choose 56 cm and have it shortened to approximately 40-50 cm for the most seamless blend.
  • If your hair reaches the shoulders or just below them, 56 cm creates a clear extension toward the chest. Have soft layers cut into the lengths for a seamless transition.
  • If your hair already reaches chest level, 56 cm adds extra length and a luxurious finish without a sharp transition.

Always use face-framing layers and a point-cutting technique in the bottom 5-10 cm. This prevents an overly full “block” at the bottom and helps the extensions blend with your natural hair. Maximum length and minimum natural hair length

How long can hair extensions be at most? Follow these blending guidelines:

  • Maximum length increase: aim for no more than 1.5 to 2 times your natural hair length. This keeps the distribution of weight and volume looking natural.
  • Planning a major length increase? Always schedule a haircut for graduated layers and face-framing, plus styling with a light wave to soften the transition.

How many cm should your hair be for extensions? For tape-ins, a minimum natural hair length of approximately 10-15 cm works best. With thin or fine hair, you can often go slightly shorter, provided the extensions are placed strategically and cut into shape properly. See also our tape extensions for thin hair. With thick or heavily layered hair, more starting length is preferable to camouflage the difference in volume.

Shorter than 56 cm? How to have your 22-inch set perfectly custom cut

Want the look of 40 or 50 cm, but the convenience and reusability of our tape-ins? Have your 22-inch set custom cut after installation. Here’s how:

  • Mark your desired fall length on dry hair and cut to just below that line. After styling, it will naturally fall slightly higher.
  • Create soft, graduated layers along the front and a subtle U- or V-shape at the back for movement.
  • Texturize the bottom 5-10 cm using point-cutting or slicing techniques. This prevents an overly blunt, heavy edge.

Bonus: with 56 cm, you have room to vary between slightly shorter in summer and longer in winter, without having to buy a new set.

How many sets do you need for volume or length?

Each Luxury for Princess tape extension set contains 10 wefts, totaling 50 grams, ideal for fine to normal hair. Are you a stylist or interested in our salon range? View the Professional tape-in extensions (22”, 50 g).

  • Extra volume for fine hair only: 1 set is often sufficient.
  • Extensions for fine to normal hair: allow for 2 sets for full yet natural-looking density.
  • Very full or thick hair generally requires more wefts, but tape-ins are primarily intended for fine to normal hair. Not sure? Ask for personalized advice on the number of sets and placement.

Frequently asked questions about the length of tape extensions

Which hair extension length looks the most natural?

Choose a length that extends your own hair by no more than 1.5 to 2 times. Then have layers cut into the bottom 5-10 cm. This makes the transition look natural and allows your hair to move more beautifully.

How many cm long does your hair need to be for tape extensions?

Allow for approximately 10-15 cm of your own hair for a seamless blend. With fine, straight hair, slightly less may be enough; with thick or heavily layered hair, a little more starting length is recommended.

How long are 40 cm extensions and where do they fall?

40 cm is approximately 16 inches and usually falls just below the shoulders. Want this effect with our set? Have 22 inches (56 cm) trimmed to approximately 40 cm after application.

How long can hair extensions be at most?

Aim for a maximum of 1.5 to 2 times your own hair length. This prevents a visible line of demarcation, keeps wearing comfort high, and protects your own hair from unnecessary tension.
